Quadrille |
What is Quadrille? Quadrille is multiple horse/ rider combinations riding together in synchrony. Dressage (the systematic training of the horse) is the basis for the movements and patterns performed. While Quadrille has been performed in Europe since the Baroque period as an equestrian pageant, it has only become a popular competitive sport in the USA in the last few decades. Teams of 4 perform both compulsory and musical freestyle tests at levels equivalent to United States Dressage Federation Introductory through Third levels. The compulsory routines are designed to test the team's ability to perform certain required movements according to standards applicable to that level. The musical freestyle allows the team to showcase their skills by demonstrating their dressage movements in a variety of creative patterns to music of their own choosing. In each performance, judges look for the following criteria: even spacing between riders, synchrony of turns and transitions and the alignment of the riders torsos. Also looked for are impulsion (energy), submission (acceptance of the riders aids) and performance as a group (ability to perform with uniform quality and in a harmonious, cooperative manner). In the musical freestyle the interpretation of the music and the creativity of the choreography is also judged. |
